Figure AI founder Brett Adcock says there will soon be as many humanoid robots as humans

Brett Adcock, the visionary behind Figure AI, predicts a future where humanoid robots will become as prevalent as humans in our daily lives. Speaking on the tech podcast Around the Prompt, he emphasized that within just a few years, our homes could be filled with these robots performing practical tasks. Adcock attributes this rapid advancement to significant improvements in hardware over the past decade. He noted that achieving the level of functionality required for humanoid robots necessitates highly reliable technology. Furthermore, advancements in neural networks, which replicate the brain's own networks, are bringing us closer to realizing this futuristic vision. Last week, Figure AI showcased an upgrade to its humanoid robot, Helix, which successfully executed an hour of continuous logistics work, demonstrating its ability to manage packages on a conveyor belt. Adcock highlighted that this achievement indicates Helix's neural networks are nearing human-like speed and efficiency. Investment in the field of humanoid robotics is booming, with Figure AI raising an impressive $2.34 billion since its inception in 2022. The latest funding round, a Series C led by SaxeCap, 1802 Ventures, and Vegvisir Capital, contributed $1.5 billion, elevating the company's valuation to $2.6 billion, according to PitchBook. The firm has also garnered support from major players like Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Adcock, who has a background in founding electric aircraft company Archer and the AI talent marketplace Vettery, provided a significant portion of the initial funding himself. He noted a dramatic shift in the investment landscape for deep tech over the last seven years, with dedicated funds emerging as investors recognize the potential of these technologies to become some of the largest businesses globally. The humanoid robotics sector is not without competition. Tesla's Optimus, a humanoid robot capable of performing various tasks, is set to be deployed in its factories by the end of the year. Boston Dynamics' Atlas can run, crawl, and perform impressive feats like breakdancing, while Agility Robotics' Digit was once tested by Amazon but has since been sidelined in favor of Amazon's own robotic designs. Figure AI aims to create versatile humanoids that can enhance human life by taking over dangerous and undesirable jobs, ultimately contributing to a more fulfilling existence for people. Adcock shared that their robots are already interacting with employees in their offices, offering drinks and patrolling the premises, making the idea of seeing humanoid robots in everyday life feel increasingly plausible. The allure of these humanoid robots is not just their physical presence; Adcock believes they will serve as critical platforms for artificial general intelligence (AGI). Meanwhile, the broader robotics market is thriving, with investors pouring $6.1 billion into various robotic ventures in 2024 alone, marking a 19% increase from the previous year. This surge includes firms focused on data collection, AI model development for robots, and robotic fleet management software, signaling a vibrant ecosystem forming around robotics. However, some experts question the efficiency of humanoid designs for all tasks. Fei-Fei Li, co-founder and CEO of World Labs, argued that the diversity of tasks might require robots to adopt forms more suited to specific environments, such as fish shapes for underwater operations, to optimize energy efficiency.
