On Thursday, Huawei introduced its latest trifold smartphone, marking a significant step in the company's efforts to reclaim its standing in both the domestic and international markets. The new Huawei Mate XTs is priced starting at 17,999 Chinese yuan (approximately $2,520) and goes up to 21,999 yuan for models featuring enhanced memory. Unlike traditional foldable smartphones that typically feature a single hinge, the Mate XTs boasts two hinges, allowing it to fold at two different points. When unfolded, the device transforms into a tablet-like form, offering a unique user experience. Huawei initially launched the concept last year with the original Mate XT, establishing itself as a pioneer in the trifold category. Since its debut in China, the Mate XTs is part of Huawei's strategy to build upon its recent gains in the Chinese smartphone market. Data from Counterpoint Research indicates that Huawei's market share in China surged to 18% in the second quarter, up from 15% a year earlier, making it the leading smartphone vendor in the country. In the foldable segment, Huawei commands an impressive 75% market share, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). The company reported selling 470,000 units of the original Mate XT device by the end of the second quarter this year, generating over $1.3 billion in revenue. Francisco Jeronimo, IDC's vice president of devices, commented on the strong performance, noting that the high price tag suggests a robust demand for innovative technology. Following U.S. sanctions in 2020 that severely impacted its smartphone operations, Huawei has shown resilience by developing its own operating system and securing the manufacture of some less advanced chips domestically. However, its presence outside of China remains limited, facing various challenges. The Mate XTs will operate on HarmonyOS 5.1, Huawei's latest software iteration, and is designed with productivity in mind. The smartphone will feature PC-grade applications optimized for its expansive trifold display, allowing users to manage multiple windows similarly to a computer. With the phone available in four colors, it includes a substantial 5600 milliampere-hour (mAh) battery, which is notably larger than many current devices. To enhance buyer confidence, Huawei is offering significant discounts on screen replacements and two complimentary service appointments, either at home or at a preferred location.
