This AI startup says it saves $30,000 a month because of a quirk in OpenAI and Anthropic's pricing

In the heart of Silicon Valley, concerns about skyrocketing expenses in AI development have become a hot topic. However, the startup Foyer has found a unique strategy to keep its costs under control, enabling it to save up to $30,000 each month. Foyer, which develops an AI browser tool and a companion app, may seem like a typical example of a company that could easily incur high AI costs. The team, including CEO Pratyush Rai, actively explores various AI technologies, with developers testing the latest iterations of Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. Yet, rather than committing to expensive enterprise plans, Foyer has opted for a more cost-effective approach. By allowing each employee to maintain their own personal accounts with OpenAI and Anthropic, Foyer has managed to significantly reduce its monthly bills. Rai and CTO Siddhartha Saxena revealed that the total cost for these accounts across their 25 employees amounts to roughly $3,000. In contrast, enterprise plans, which are based on API usage, could send costs soaring to between $30,000 and $40,000 monthly. This financial strategy is made possible due to peculiarities in the pricing structures of OpenAI and Anthropic. Both companies offer personal plans that provide generous usage limits, which Saxena believes act as a marketing tactic to attract individual users, as opposed to the more restrictive enterprise options. The introduction of these advanced coding tools has revolutionized Foyer's operations. Once staffed by around 20 people focused on their browser extension, Merlin AI, the team has since streamlined its workforce to just three developers, all equipped with AI tools that enhance productivity. This shift has allowed Foyer to allocate resources toward developing Thine, an innovative app that captures ambient audio through users' smartphones. The company hopes that by providing the AI with contextual 'memory,' it can assist users in managing everyday tasks more efficiently. This ambitious project relies heavily on voice-to-text transcription and data management, tasks that AI now handles with impressive efficacy. While personal plans offer a cheaper alternative, enterprise tiers bring additional features such as enhanced security and administrative oversight. An Anthropic representative pointed out that while small teams can thrive on individual plans, larger companies often prefer enterprise solutions for better governance and visibility. Rai and Saxena are closely monitoring token prices as both Anthropic and OpenAI gear up for potential IPOs. They remain optimistic that advancements in semiconductor technology will lead to further reductions in token costs, making it feasible for Foyer to continue utilizing these personal plans. As token prices potentially decrease, the startup could see its expenses plummet even further, allowing for broader development opportunities, particularly for the compute-intensive Thine app. With improvements in coding tools, Saxena noted that their team is utilizing tokens at a scale previously unimaginable, a staggering increase that Rai humorously amplified to '100,000x.' This sharp rise in efficiency underscores the transformative impact of AI technologies on startup operations today.
