Spotify reveals when India tunes in: Gen Z and millennials shape daily music rituals

Spotify has shared intriguing findings about the music habits of Gen Z and millennials in India, revealing how these demographics integrate music into their daily lives. Conducted across major metropolitan areas like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Lucknow, the study analyzed the behaviors of over 2,000 users, highlighting music's significant role in both practical and emotional contexts. The research indicates that music listening peaks during weekday mornings from 8 to 10 AM, primarily linked to commuting routines. Additionally, there is another surge on weekends between 10 AM and 12 PM, when schedules are more relaxed. The study pinpointed six pivotal moments for listening: unwinding, commuting, exercising, jogging or walking, casual hangouts, and social gatherings, each catering to different emotional needs. Notably, millennials were found to be more active in outdoor and social listening scenarios, especially during commutes and jogs. In contrast, Gen Z tends to favor music for home workouts, illustrating a deeper connection between fitness and self-care practices. Gender dynamics also influenced listening preferences: men were inclined towards solitary, goal-oriented listening, while women enjoyed shared musical experiences, like home parties or group exercise sessions. The findings reveal a strong inclination for playlists tailored to specific moods and moments, whether it’s a calming evening or an energetic commute. Culturally rich genres, including Bollywood, I-Pop, and Punjabi rap, serve as emotional touchstones, enhancing listeners' sense of identity and community. Spotify caters to these preferences with curated playlists such as Energy Workout Mix and Chill Mix, along with user-generated ‘Jams’ that resonate during social interactions. In every aspect of their lives, whether seeking motivation, relaxation, or social connection, music continues to be an essential companion for these generations.
