During a recent earnings call, Customers Bank CEO Sam Sidhu made an unexpected revelation: he had not personally delivered the prepared remarks. Instead, his AI clone handled the presentation, marking a significant first in the realm of public company earnings calls. Sidhu explained that this demonstration was part of a larger initiative as Customers Bank, valued at $25.9 billion and focused on startups and small businesses, embraces artificial intelligence. The bank has entered into a multi-year partnership with OpenAI, which will involve embedding engineers at Customers Bank to streamline lending and client onboarding processes. This strategic move positions Customers Bank ahead of competitors in the ongoing race within the financial sector to integrate AI as an essential digital workforce. Sidhu aims to automate core banking operations, drastically reducing loan processing times from several weeks to just days. While many in finance discuss AI in vague terms of productivity, Sidhu is directly linking these advancements to financial performance. He anticipates that the implementation of AI will enhance the bank's efficiency ratio from approximately 49% to the low 40s, thereby improving returns starting next year. According to Sidhu, the partnership with OpenAI will be mutually beneficial. "We’re going to be co-creating enterprise solutions that they could eventually market to other banks," he stated, emphasizing a vision for an end-to-end automated workflow encompassing lending, deposits, and payments. OpenAI’s chief revenue officer, Denise Dresser, expressed pride in supporting Customers Bank's efforts to establish a more intelligent operational model that empowers employees and elevates client service. The bank anticipates the rollout of AI agents across various functions, including lending and payments, within the next six to twelve months. If successful, the time required to close a commercial loan could drop from 30 to 45 days to just about seven days, while account setups for complex commercial clients could be reduced to under 20 minutes through conversational AI and automated document collection. Sidhu described the concept of an autonomous agent as a digital worker capable of operating continuously. Customers Bank, which has been laying the groundwork for this transformation for years, first engaged OpenAI in 2023 due to Sidhu’s initial investment in the company through venture capital connections. Their recent agreement deepens this collaboration, allowing AI engineers to integrate into the bank's operational framework. Despite being smaller than giants like JPMorgan Chase, which has $4.9 trillion in assets, Customers Bank holds a unique advantage. Sidhu noted that larger banks face more complex regulatory hurdles concerning AI implementation, which smaller banks like his are not expected to navigate at the same level. This regulatory environment encourages community and regional banks to compete more effectively. Currently, Customers Bank employs AI to generate half of its software code, resulting in a significant reduction of 28,000 work hours, equivalent to avoiding the hiring of about 15 full-time employees. Sidhu sees this as a chance to slow recruitment while maximizing revenue per employee. The bank is also looking to venture into new business opportunities that previously would have been too costly to pursue without AI assistance. Unlike standard software licensing agreements, Sidhu emphasized that both Customers Bank and OpenAI are pooling resources to develop new solutions together. This collaboration provides OpenAI with practical use cases within a regulated financial setting. "It’s going to benefit our investors, and our customers will see the advantages, too," Sidhu concluded, expressing hope that regulators will appreciate the reduced risks associated with these innovations.
