A Meta product manager with no technical background says vibe coding gave him 'superpowers'

A product manager at Meta has shared how AI-driven coding tools have transformed his role, even though he lacks a technical background and finds coding daunting. Zevi Arnovitz revealed in a recent episode of "Lenny's Podcast" that discovering these tools in mid-2024 felt like gaining "superpowers" in his career. He emphasized that mastering the intentional use of AI is a significant advantage for product managers, enhancing their effectiveness in the field. Joining Meta in September after three years at Wix, Arnovitz has completely revamped his workflow to integrate AI tools like Cursor, along with models from Anthropic and Google. These resources allow him to brainstorm product concepts, develop execution plans, write code, and update documentation. This evolution has shifted his responsibilities from merely coordinating between engineering and design to taking on a more hands-on role as a product owner. Arnovitz believes that the future will see many non-technical professionals stepping into building roles. He stated, "Everyone's going to become a builder," predicting that this trend will gain momentum in the coming years. However, he cautioned that non-technical product managers should still avoid managing complex infrastructure changes or large-scale projects. Instead, AI has made it feasible for them to handle smaller user interface projects by creating features and then passing the code to developers for final adjustments. As AI tools continue to advance, Arnovitz anticipates a merging of titles and responsibilities within teams, encouraging product managers to view vibe coding as a collaborative learning experience alongside engineering staff. This shift is redefining traditional roles, making it easier for individuals in non-technical positions to engage directly in product development. Dylan Field, CEO of Figma, echoed this sentiment on the same podcast, noting that AI has prompted a broader range of professionals, including designers and researchers, to explore various roles in product development. He remarked that the lines between these roles are becoming increasingly blurred, as everyone contributes to the building process in their own way. This trend is also reflected in how companies are adapting their training programs. LinkedIn, for instance, has revamped its associate product manager program into an associate product builder track, designed to equip new hires with skills in coding, design, and product management. Tomer Cohen, LinkedIn's former chief product officer, highlighted the importance of training individuals who can navigate across different functions in the product development spectrum.
