AI could be the best thing to happen to young workers, says Handshake's CEO

In the face of rising anxiety about AI potentially erasing entry-level jobs, Garrett Lord, CEO of the job search platform Handshake, offers a fresh perspective. Speaking on "Lenny's Podcast," he emphasized that today's young graduates are in a prime position to thrive in the job market due to their inherent familiarity with AI technology. Lord likened the ability to leverage AI to donning an "Iron Man suit," suggesting that this skill set empowers young workers. Contrary to the prevailing narrative that AI will eliminate junior positions, he revealed that employers using Handshake, ranging from Fortune 500 firms to government agencies, are expressing a different sentiment. "Many claims about the doom of young people's job prospects are exaggerated," Lord stated, highlighting a trend where young professionals adept in AI can handle tasks traditionally managed by entire teams. For instance, in social media marketing, a single employee can now produce videos, create designs, manage postings, and analyze data without needing a background in data science. While acknowledging that the job landscape will transform and workers must adapt, Lord views AI as a catalyst for enhanced productivity and greater impact. He believes it empowers individuals to achieve more than ever before. Other tech leaders echo this optimism. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, noted that although AI will eliminate some jobs, younger generations are better positioned to navigate these changes. He remarked, "If I were 22 right now and graduating college, I would feel like the luckiest kid in all of history." Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, encourages young workers to leverage their AI expertise when applying for jobs, stating, "You are generation AI. You are AI native, which makes you immensely attractive to employers." However, not all voices in the tech community share this positivity. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, warned that AI could potentially eliminate up to half of entry-level white-collar positions in the coming years, stressing that many remain unaware of the impending changes. "It sounds crazy, and people just don’t believe it," he remarked. As the dialogue around AI continues to evolve, the future of work for Gen Z remains a topic of intense discussion, with a blend of hope and caution defining the narrative.
