US companies are using AI to help offset increased tariff costs

In the face of escalating tariff costs, many US companies are turning to artificial intelligence to streamline their operations and reduce expenses. The Light Phone, a company specializing in minimalist smartphones, has leveraged AI to navigate the complexities of international shipping amid tariff fluctuations. Since the introduction of sweeping tariffs by the Trump administration, which affected imports from over 90 countries, businesses have faced significant challenges. Although recent trade agreements with partners like the European Union, South Korea, and Japan have settled on a 15% tariff rate, countries such as India and Brazil still impose much higher tariffs, reaching as high as 50%. As companies grapple with these increased costs, they are finding innovative solutions through AI technologies. For instance, Solventum, a producer of surgical and dental supplies, recently adopted a digital procurement tool from Arkestro. This AI platform enhances their competitive-bidding process and helps secure better pricing from suppliers, enabling them to effectively manage their budget amidst rising tariffs. Magnus Lundgren, Solventum's senior vice president and chief procurement officer, noted that the platform uses a combination of AI, machine learning, and insights into human behavior to evaluate suppliers. This has not only accelerated the vetting process but also led to substantial savings on goods. Similarly, JR Metal Works, a small manufacturer specializing in pipes and metal components, utilizes Xometry, an AI-driven marketplace that connects manufacturers with suppliers. This platform automatically adjusts pricing in response to tariff changes, allowing the company to stay competitive. The Light Phone's co-founder, Joe Hollier, shared that AI played a crucial role in their response to tariff-induced uncertainties. Initially, the company imported devices from China to the US before shipping them to international markets. However, the dual taxation from tariffs made international shipping financially burdensome. To combat this, The Light Phone established an international fulfillment center to bypass US tariffs on global orders. They also partnered with Mayple Global, an AI-powered e-commerce platform, to simplify the logistics of international shipments by automating product classification and documentation. As a result, Hollier reported significant cost reductions, estimating at least a 20% savings on goods due to these strategic pivots. This financial relief is anticipated to benefit their customers as well, paving the way for a more sustainable business model amid evolving trade conditions.
