Software startup deploys Singapore’s first quantum computer for commercial use

In a groundbreaking development, Horizon Quantum, a software startup based in Singapore, has officially deployed the city-state's first quantum computer for commercial use. This achievement marks a significant milestone as the company gears up for its anticipated listing in the United States. Founded in 2018 by quantum researcher Joe Fitzsimons, Horizon Quantum's machine is now fully operational, integrating components from notable quantum computing suppliers such as Maybell Quantum, Quantum Machines, and Rigetti Computing. Fitzsimons, the CEO, expressed enthusiasm about this integration, stating that it makes Horizon Quantum the first pure-play quantum software company to own its own quantum computer. "Our goal is to empower developers to utilize quantum computers for real-world applications," Fitzsimons explained in an interview. He emphasized the importance of understanding the full technological stack, stating, "It's crucial to comprehend how everything works down to the physical level, which is why we now have a test bed." The startup aims to leverage its new quantum hardware to accelerate the development of practical quantum applications across various industries, including pharmaceuticals and finance. Quantum computing holds the potential to solve complex problems that traditional computers struggle with, such as simulating molecular interactions for drug design or assessing portfolio risks by analyzing numerous scenarios. A leading executive from Google has indicated that practical applications of quantum technology could be just five years away, though current systems are still in early development stages and face numerous challenges. Despite these hurdles, investment in quantum computing is increasing, with major tech companies like Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM, along with the U.S. government, committing substantial resources to advance the technology. Horizon Quantum’s announcement coincides with a merger agreement with dMY Squared Technology Group Inc., a special purpose acquisition company, which is set to take the firm public on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol "HQ." This merger, initially agreed upon in September, values Horizon Quantum at approximately $503 million, with expectations for the deal to finalize in the first quarter of 2026. Additionally, this development reinforces Singapore's aspirations to become a regional hub for quantum computing. The nation has invested heavily in quantum technology since establishing its first research center in 2007. Prior to Horizon Quantum's launch, Singapore had only one quantum computer, primarily utilized for research. Looking ahead, U.S.-based Quantinuum plans to deploy its own commercial quantum system by 2026. The National Quantum Strategy unveiled by Singapore in May 2024 commits around S$300 million over five years to bolster the sector, with a significant focus on developing local quantum computer processors.
