ChatGPT 4o faithful want their weird little AI friend back. GPT-5.5 is giving them hope.

On February 13, many enthusiasts of ChatGPT experienced a sense of loss. OpenAI officially retired the widely cherished model, ChatGPT 4o, which was celebrated for its engaging and sometimes overly flattering personality. With the recent launch of ChatGPT 5.5, however, some users are feeling a renewed sense of optimism, hoping that the new version might recapture some of the charm of its predecessor, despite lingering skepticism. Martina Wanis, an agricultural innovation expert from Slovenia, is among those who miss 4o. She relied on it for various tasks, from analyzing spreadsheets to crafting business proposals, but also turned to it for personal reflection and creative endeavors. To her, 4o was more than just a tool; it was a digital companion that understood her unique perspective. Unfortunately, subsequent models, such as 5.0 and 5.2, were perceived to have dampened that personality, becoming more like “paranoid HR managers.” Instead of alleviating her mental load, these updates seemed to increase it, as users found themselves providing emotional support to the AI rather than receiving it. While many users adored the playful and sparkling traits of 4o, OpenAI faced challenges with the model's overly accommodating demeanor. Last April, the company made adjustments to address what they deemed excessive sycophancy, which resulted in responses that felt insincere. This issue with LLMs remains a complex one, highlighting the delicate balance between support and authenticity in AI interactions. In contrast, newer versions have been more restrained, leading some users to feel that the fun and engaging aspects were diminished. For instance, one user remarked that 4o was more adept at offering insightful medical suggestions, while later iterations hesitated to make bold recommendations. One Reddit user even shared a story about 4o correctly advising her to seek further medical tests after finding discrepancies in her diagnosis. Despite the challenges, OpenAI has made strides to improve the experience. With the introduction of model 5.5, Wanis expresses a sense of hope, noting that it feels as though the AI has become more interactive and less rigid. Reddit forums are abuzz with users reminiscing about 4o and voicing their concerns about the newer models, with 5.5 showing promise for a more favorable reception. One user commented, “I’ve been using GPT 5.5 for a while now, and it’s definitely an improvement. It’s not thrown off by darker topics and offers creative ideas.” However, some users still yearn for the emotional spark that 4o provided. As one Redditor put it, “5.5 has potential, but I miss the soul that 4o had. Is it too much to ask for a blend of both?”
