China's Honor launches new challenge to Samsung with thin foldable smartphone and a big battery

Honor has unveiled its latest innovation, the Magic V5, a sleek foldable smartphone that sets its sights on challenging Samsung's dominance in the market. With a notable focus on thinness and battery performance, the new device is initially set to launch in China, with plans for international availability later this year. The Magic V5 measures between 8.8 mm and 9 mm when folded, depending on the color variant, making it slimmer than its predecessor, the Magic V3, which was 9.2 mm thick. Weighing between 217 grams and 222 grams, the new model is also lighter compared to the previous version's 226 grams. Notably, Honor is offering a special edition of the Magic V5 with a substantial 1 terabyte storage option, along with a battery capacity exceeding 6000 milliampere-hour, making it one of the most powerful foldables in terms of battery life. As the competition in the foldable smartphone market intensifies, Honor is keen to highlight its standout features. Although foldable devices currently account for less than 2% of the overall smartphone market, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the stakes are high. Samsung leads this niche with a 34% market share, followed closely by Huawei with just under 24%. Honor currently holds the fourth position with nearly 11% of the market. Honor's launch comes just ahead of Samsung's own foldable release, scheduled for July 9, which is expected to present a thinner alternative. Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at IDC, praised the Magic V5, stating, "This is the dream foldable smartphone that any user interested in this category will think of," emphasizing its competitive battery capabilities. The ongoing battle for the thinnest foldable phone has become crucial as consumers increasingly seek larger screens without added weight. Analysts predict that Samsung's upcoming model may challenge Honor's sleek design, intensifying the competition further. Neil Shah, co-founder of Counterpoint Research, highlighted that Honor's main challenges lie in brand recognition and distribution compared to Samsung. He noted, "Samsung has the edge in brand equity and global reach." As Honor continues to expand its presence outside of China, building its brand remains a priority. Additionally, the tech industry is witnessing a surge in AI integration within smartphones. Honor has committed to a $10 billion investment in AI over the next five years, aiming to develop advanced personal assistants. Their AI assistant, Yoyo, can seamlessly interact with various AI models, enabling functionalities such as creating presentation decks and hailing taxis through multiple apps in China, optimizing for the fastest options available.
