Honor launches AI phone tools that help users get online shopping discounts and more

In a bold move to capture the attention of consumers, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor is introducing a groundbreaking AI tool designed to enhance the online shopping experience. This feature, which will be integrated into the newly launched Honor Magic8 smartphone, enables users to effortlessly compare prices and discover discounts across major Chinese e-commerce platforms such as JD.com and Alibaba's Taobao. For instance, this AI-powered shopping assistant has already demonstrated its potential by helping users save up to 20% on purchases by uncovering hidden coupons. The rollout of these AI capabilities comes at a strategic time, coinciding with China's peak shopping season, notably the Nov. 11 Singles Day, which is similar to Black Friday in the West. Fei Fang, President of Products at Honor Device, shared in a recent interview that the company aims to ascend to one of the top three smartphone brands in the Chinese market by year-end, driven by these innovative AI features. She foresees a future where users will rely on an AI portal for various smartphone functions instead of traditional apps, paving the way for more personalized services. Activation of these AI features occurs through Honor's 'Yoyo' chatbot, embedded within its Android-based MagicOS. While the company has noted that international sales contribute significantly to its revenue, it remains focused on reclaiming market dominance in China, where it currently holds a 13% market share compared to competitors like Apple, Huawei, and Vivo. Apple, which is also seeking to strengthen its foothold in China, recently announced the launch of the iPhone Air. However, it has yet to introduce similar AI functionalities in the region, despite a collaboration with Alibaba on tech tools. Honor, which separated from Huawei in 2020, has formed a strategic alliance with Alibaba to co-develop various AI smartphone capabilities. Beyond shopping, Honor's AI tools extend to photography guidance, restaurant recommendations based on images, and even taxi booking through simple voice commands. Remarkably, the AI adapts to user preferences, ensuring that personal data remains secure on the device rather than in the cloud. The launch of these AI functionalities also aligns with global trends, as competitors like ChatGPT explore online shopping options through AI interfaces. Honor emphasizes that its AI system not only streamlines the shopping process but also learns from user interactions, significantly expanding its operational capabilities. As part of its ambitious vision, Honor plans to invest $10 billion in AI over the next five years, focusing on creating value for consumers before pursuing commercialization. The company is committed to evolving into a leading AI device provider while maintaining its status in the broader tech landscape, which includes smartwatches, tablets, and laptops.
