Honda is killing its EVs — and any chance of competing in the future

In a challenging landscape for traditional automakers, Honda has made a startling decision to halt its electric vehicle (EV) programs, casting doubt on its ability to compete in the evolving automotive market. This week, the company announced the cessation of development on key models, including the electric Acura RDX and Honda 0 sedan and SUV, which were designed to be its first fully electric offerings. The lack of transparency surrounding these projects raises questions about Honda's commitment to the EV sector. Honda's decision comes amid mounting pressures from U.S. tariffs and fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers. However, critics argue that the automaker never established a robust EV strategy to begin with. Following the initial announcement, reports surfaced that Honda would also cease production of the Prologue, a vehicle largely engineered and built by General Motors. This shift could have significant repercussions. By stepping back from EV development, Honda risks falling further behind in two major automotive trends: electric drivetrains and software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Many legacy automakers, including Honda, seem to view EVs merely as cars with different powertrains. There is a prevalent misconception that they can wait for the transition to stabilize and then retrofit existing models. However, this approach has been proven ineffective, often resulting in vehicles that are heavy, inefficient, and costly. For example, Ford's Mustang Mach-E, while popular, has faced challenges due to its reliance on an outdated platform, leading to issues like a heavier wiring harness compared to Tesla's models. Such engineering decisions can hinder performance and profitability. Moreover, by withdrawing from the EV space, Honda is missing out on valuable learning experiences related to both development and manufacturing. This includes the opportunity to engage with new suppliers and refine its supply chains. Additionally, the absence of direct consumer feedback on EV preferences puts Honda at a disadvantage as it overlooks the evolving expectations of modern drivers. The automotive industry is also witnessing a shift toward software-defined vehicles, which benefit from regular updates and advanced features. Companies like Tesla and Rivian have set high standards with their user-friendly technology and driver assistance capabilities. Honda, however, has not made significant strides in this arena, which could further alienate it from consumers who are increasingly prioritizing tech-savvy vehicles. As Honda grapples with its identity, it finds itself at a crossroads. Historically known for its efficient internal combustion engines, the company now faces diminishing relevance as the industry pivots toward electrification. The allure of Honda's vehicles has often been their reliability and affordability, but as EVs continue to improve in these areas, the automaker risks losing ground. Recent earnings reports indicate that Honda is aware of the challenges it faces, stating that it struggled to deliver products that offer better value than emerging EV competitors, contributing to significant financial losses. Without a clear strategy for EV development, Honda may soon find itself in a precarious position across global markets.
