
In a significant strategic shift, Honda has commenced the production of batteries intended for energy storage systems, as reported by Nikkei Asia. This move marks Honda as the latest automotive manufacturer to venture into the burgeoning energy sector. The decision to pivot towards energy storage comes just three months after Honda halted its electric vehicle (EV) programs in the United States. Originally, these batteries were meant for EVs to be manufactured at a facility in Ohio, which Honda operates in partnership with LG Energy Solution. Instead of powering vehicles, these cells are now being redirected to data centers. The change in direction coincides with a downturn in EV demand in the U.S., following the cancellation of tax credits by the GOP that were designed to boost EV and battery production domestically. Sales of new EVs have declined year-over-year, partly due to consumers rushing to make purchases before the tax incentives disappeared last September. This uncertainty prompted Honda to make drastic changes, including the cancellation of three EV models intended for the U.S. market. Last fiscal year, the automaker recorded a staggering $15.7 billion write-down, which was influenced by its efforts to restructure its EV strategy and a declining performance in China, where EV sales have been surging. Despite these challenges, Honda has not terminated its joint venture with LG Energy. Like many other automakers, including Tesla, Ford, and GM, Honda recognizes the standalone potential of the battery industry. The stationary energy storage market has experienced remarkable growth, expanding by 32% year-over-year, according to a report from SEIA and Benchmark Minerals. In the first quarter of this year alone, 9.7 gigawatt-hours of energy storage systems were installed—equivalent to the batteries needed for approximately 120,000 EVs. This rapid expansion is projected to continue, with estimates suggesting that by the end of the decade, an annual installation of 110 gigawatt-hours of energy storage will nearly triple the market's capacity. The profitability of this sector is noteworthy as well; Tesla, for instance, has reported gross profits of 30% on its Megapacks and Powerwalls, significantly higher than its vehicle margins. While many stationary batteries are being deployed at data centers, a considerable number are also linked to the electrical grid. As battery costs decrease, they have established an essential role in stabilizing the grid and enhancing the reliability of renewable energy sources like wind and solar. While Honda may still be navigating its approach to the U.S. EV market, its commitment to participating in the energy transition is clearly evident.
