US home battery installations hit record high in early 2026

In early 2026, there has been a remarkable surge in home battery installations across the United States, driven by homeowners looking to combat increasing electricity expenses. This trend has been significantly influenced by state incentives aimed at promoting energy independence and flexibility for power grid operators, as well as AI data centers. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that new home battery installations achieved a staggering 673 megawatts of energy storage capacity in the first quarter of 2026. This surge is particularly notable in states grappling with high electricity prices, as these regions have enacted policies that encourage homeowners to adopt battery systems. Notably, California and Hawaii lead the charge in new residential battery installations, while Texas and Arizona have also seen considerable growth in this sector. California incentivizes homeowners with solar panels to integrate battery systems by offering enhanced pricing for electricity they supply to the grid after sunset. In Hawaii, a one-time payment of $400 per kilowatt of battery storage serves as an additional motivation for homeowners. However, this record-breaking interest in home batteries comes at a time when residential solar panel installations have experienced a slowdown. This decline is attributed to the elimination of a 30 percent federal solar tax credit for homeowners, a change brought about by the previous administration's policies. Despite this, solar power generation in the U.S. continues to rise, even surpassing coal-fired generation as of April. Additionally, the growing trend of battery installations aligns with escalating electricity costs for residential customers. Recent data from the Energy Information Administration indicates that the average residential electricity price increased by over 7 percent in April 2026 compared to the previous year. Homeowners equipped with smart battery management systems stand to gain significantly by storing energy during low-cost periods and utilizing it during times of peak demand.
