For seven years, fans have passionately awaited the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong, a sequel that has now arrived just over a week ago. While the excitement was palpable, the conversation quickly shifted from anticipation to intense discussions about the game's difficulty level. This topic has generated a flurry of opinions, prompting Team Cherry, the developers behind the title, to announce plans for a patch to slightly reduce the difficulty of early-game bosses, Moorwing and Sister Splinter. So, is Hollow Knight: Silksong truly too challenging, or are players simply in need of honing their skills? To explore this, we’ve turned to the Ars Difficulty Matrix (ADM™), initially used to dissect Elden Ring's challenging mechanics in 2022. The ADM™ allows us to examine the nuances of game difficulty and how Silksong's design challenges players, both positively and negatively. One crucial aspect of Silksong's difficulty is whether it requires players to execute specific button sequences with precise timing, often referred to as a "reflex test." There’s no denying that Hollow Knight: Silksong demands sharp gaming reflexes, particularly during boss encounters. Players must stay alert as bosses deliver swift attacks, often with minimal warning, requiring quick decision-making and precise movements to dodge and counterattack effectively. Unlike many games in the Souls-like genre, Silksong lacks a spammable dodge mechanic that grants temporary invulnerability. Instead, players must strategize their movements carefully, navigating to safer areas on the screen with tight timing, which can be quite a challenge. This design choice has left many gamers divided on whether the difficulty is a barrier or a rewarding challenge that enhances the gameplay experience.
