In a groundbreaking move, global leaders have come together to implement significant restrictions on the international trade of sharks and rays, species that are facing the threat of extinction. This historic decision, made during the 20th Conference of the Parties (COP20) to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, will provide new protections for more than 70 species, including the oceanic whitetip shark, whale shark, and manta ray. CITES, a key United Nations treaty, mandates that countries either regulate or prohibit trade in endangered species to ensure their survival. Sharks and rays, vital apex predators in marine ecosystems, have been a target for commercial fishing for decades, leading to a staggering global market worth nearly $1 billion per year. Luke Warwick, director of shark and ray conservation at the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), highlights the importance of these measures in preserving marine biodiversity. The newly adopted conservation strategies signify a crucial global pledge to diminish the demand for shark products, including meat and fins. "These new protections are a powerful step toward ensuring these species have a real chance at recovery," stated Diego Cardeñosa, an assistant professor at Florida International University and a leading figure in predator ecology and conservation efforts. Currently, over a third of shark and ray species are at risk of extinction, with pelagic shark populations plummeting by more than 70% over the past five decades. Reef shark populations have also been severely impacted, disappearing from one in five coral reefs globally. Warwick emphasizes the urgency of the situation, describing it as a silent crisis, largely driven by overfishing that has only recently garnered attention. The world must now focus on reversing these trends to secure a future for these remarkable creatures.
