Towers once planned for California shuttle launches leveled for SpaceX rockets

A significant chapter in the history of American space exploration has come to a close as Space Launch Complex-6 (SLC-6) at Vandenberg Space Force Station has been cleared of its long-standing support towers. This pivotal site, known more for its unrealized launches, is now set to accommodate the modern capabilities of SpaceX rockets. On June 16, a series of controlled demolitions effectively removed the access tower, mobile service tower, and remnants of the assembly building at SLC-6. These structures, which had stood for decades, were taken down in a coordinated effort to pave the way for upcoming Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy missions. Col. James T. Horne III, commander of Space Launch Delta 30 at Vandenberg, expressed pride in this modernization, stating that it represents six decades of American ingenuity and dedication to maintaining space superiority. The demolition, although planned, was only publicly confirmed shortly after it occurred at 11 am PDT. The operations began with the access tower, followed by the mobile service tower, and concluded with the large assembly building, which featured a prominent American flag. The typical marine layer of low clouds and fog cast a somber atmosphere over the historic site during the demolition. Originally developed in 1966, SLC-6 was intended to support the U.S. Air Force's inaugural efforts to send astronauts into Earth orbit, utilizing adaptations from NASA's Project Gemini. Although it was initially designed for the Titan IIIM missile program, which was ultimately canceled, the site later aimed to serve as a launch pad for Department of Defense missions involving the space shuttle. Notably, SLC-6 was configured to stack the orbiter Discovery directly on the pad, distinguishing it from NASA's Kennedy Space Center setup. As SpaceX prepares to usher in a new era of space travel from this historic location, the transformation of SLC-6 marks a significant milestone in the evolution of American aerospace endeavors.
