DOJ seizes record $225 million in crypto tied to global 'pig butchering' scams

In a landmark move, the U.S. Justice Department revealed on Wednesday that it has seized over $225 million in cryptocurrency connected to extensive 'pig butchering' scams. These fraudulent schemes have inflicted significant financial damage on victims around the world, with billions lost to deceptive investment platforms. Federal prosecutors initiated a civil forfeiture action, marking this as the most substantial cryptocurrency seizure in the history of the U.S. Secret Service. Shawn Bradstreet, the special agent in charge of the San Francisco Field Office, emphasized the unprecedented scale of this operation, stating, "This seizure of $225.3 million in funds linked to cryptocurrency investment scams marks the largest cryptocurrency seizure in U.S. Secret Service history." The criminal network associated with these scams has impacted at least 400 victims globally, with a notable number residing in the United States. Reports from the FBI indicate that cryptocurrency fraud led to over $5.8 billion in losses for victims last year alone. The seized assets are now undergoing forfeiture proceedings, with the intention of eventually reimbursing those who fell prey to these scams. Utilizing advanced blockchain analysis and other investigative techniques, the U.S. Secret Service and FBI successfully traced the cryptocurrency back to stolen funds. The Department of Justice acknowledged the role of Tether, the largest stablecoin issuer, in facilitating this operation. According to the legal complaint, the seized funds were intricately linked to the theft and laundering of money from victims of various cryptocurrency investment frauds, which often involve elements of romance to build trust. The network employed a multitude of transactions to obscure the funds' origins, utilizing complex blockchain tactics to mask the movement of stolen assets.
