In a groundbreaking move, the United States government has initiated its largest compensation effort for victims of human trafficking, unveiling a $200 million fund derived from the seizure of assets linked to the infamous website Backpage.com. Announced on Thursday, this initiative by the Department of Justice (DOJ) is hailed as the most significant remission process to date aimed at aiding survivors of trafficking. Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti emphasized the importance of this effort, stating that it demonstrates the DOJ's firm commitment to using asset forfeiture as a means to strip criminals of their profits while providing restitution to those affected. This initiative follows the convictions of owners and executives associated with Backpage, who were found guilty of various crimes, including money laundering and facilitating unlawful commercial sex across state and international lines. Galeotti highlighted the dark legacy of Backpage.com, which was one of the largest platforms for commercial sex and trafficking during its 14 years of operation. The site's closure in 2018 led to the emergence of CityXGuide, which became a significant hub for similar exploitative advertisements. Victims impacted by these platforms may now have the opportunity to seek compensation. Individuals who can present evidence of financial losses related to their trafficking experiences, specifically those linked to ads on Backpage from January 1, 2004, to April 6, 2018, or on CityXGuide from April 8, 2018, to June 19, 2020, are encouraged to apply for support through the newly established claims website.
