Hinge CEO steps down to launch Overtone, an AI dating app

Justin McLeod, the CEO of Hinge, is leaving his position to spearhead a new dating app called Overtone, which utilizes artificial intelligence technology. This new venture is supported by Match Group, the parent company of Hinge, Tinder, and OkCupid, which has provided pre-seed funding and intends to secure a significant ownership stake in Overtone. Overtone has been developed as a project within Hinge over the past year, where McLeod and his team have focused on creating an innovative platform that aims to foster deeper connections through AI and voice technology. This initiative reflects a broader trend, as other dating app founders, like Whitney Wolfe Herd of Bumble, are also exploring how AI can enhance matchmaking capabilities. The landscape of online dating is becoming increasingly competitive, with many established platforms experimenting with AI to better engage users, particularly younger generations like Gen Z, who are showing signs of fatigue with traditional online dating methods. For instance, Tinder has experienced a decline in paid subscribers over the past nine quarters, prompting a push towards AI-driven features designed to increase user interactions. Hinge recently introduced its own AI feature, “Convo Starters,” which assists users in generating engaging conversation starters, moving beyond the typical small talk. Other apps, including Tinder and Facebook Dating, are also integrating AI for improved matching processes. However, the integration of AI raises privacy concerns. Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff mentioned that an upcoming Tinder feature called Chemistry will analyze users' camera rolls—if permission is granted—highlighting the importance of being cautious with personal data. Founded by McLeod in 2011, Hinge has positioned itself as a dating app focused on building meaningful relationships rather than casual encounters. The app is projected to reach $1 billion in revenue by 2027 and was acquired by Match Group in 2019. Jackie Jantos, who previously served as Hinge’s president and chief marketing officer, will take over as CEO, while McLeod will continue to provide guidance until March. In a recent interview, Jantos emphasized the need for authenticity and transparency in digital experiences, particularly for Gen Z users who are seeking genuine connections. Despite concerns about AI's role, Hinge's AI recommendation features have already led to a 15% increase in matches and user interactions in earlier quarters, indicating a successful integration of technology into the dating experience. Under Jantos's leadership, Hinge plans to maintain its commitment to innovation that resonates with contemporary cultural dynamics and user needs.
