The founder of Hinge raised $18M to build a new AI dating service, Overtone

Justin McLeod, the visionary behind Hinge, has successfully raised $18 million to launch a groundbreaking dating service named Overtone. Having stepped down as CEO of Hinge just last year, McLeod's new venture is being supported by Match Group, the parent company of popular dating apps like Tinder and OkCupid, as well as investors from FirstMark Capital and Pace Capital. Details about Overtone remain sparse, but the platform is set to offer a unique approach to dating. Described as a 'voice- and audio-forward service powered by AI,' it aims to facilitate curated introductions rather than just matching users based on profiles. In a blog post, McLeod emphasized, "Overtone is not a dating app in the traditional sense. We’re moving away from the social platform model that reduces individuals to mere statistics, quotes, and images. There are no complex algorithmic feeds that rely on fleeting impulses, nor do users have to manage likes and conversations with multiple people simultaneously." This shift in perspective comes at a time when many dating app users are expressing dissatisfaction with conventional methods. A recent Forbes Health survey revealed that 78% of participants felt burnt out from using dating apps, spending an average of 51 minutes daily with little success in forming meaningful connections. While many platforms are turning to AI to enhance matchmaking quality—offering features like AI-generated conversation starters—users are increasingly wary of entrusting their personal interactions to technology. McLeod's vision for Overtone focuses on using AI to identify potential matches rather than replacing genuine conversations. He stated, "We strive to understand each individual deeply, capturing their unique stories in their own voice. Our goal is to make only the introductions that truly matter, based on relationship science and thoughtful consideration. We also provide clear explanations for why we believe someone could be a perfect match." The landscape of dating apps is evolving, with newcomers like Ditto and Date Drop adopting similar philosophies that prioritize meaningful connections over the superficial swipe culture. Overtone is expected to launch later this year, though its initial availability will be limited to select locations. The company has also announced that renowned relationship expert Esther Perel will be joining its board, alongside Match CEO Spencer Rascoff and leadership advisor Diana Chapman.
