At ElevenLabs, a prominent AI startup valued at $11 billion, sales representatives face an intense performance requirement: they must generate 20 times their base salary or risk losing their positions. Carles Reina, the company’s VP of sales, shared insights on this demanding quota during a recent appearance on the 20VC podcast. Reina explained that if a sales rep earns a base salary of $100,000, their sales target is set at an impressive $2 million. "If you don't achieve your quota, then you're going to be out, right?" Reina emphasized the company's strict stance on performance, describing their approach as 'ruthless.' ElevenLabs, which recently secured $500 million in funding, operates in compact teams of five to ten members each, according to CEO and cofounder Mati Staniszewski. This structure is designed to enhance efficiency and accountability, fostering an environment where high performance is paramount. Reina noted that more than 80% of sales reps manage to meet their set quotas, demonstrating the effectiveness of this strategy. The trend of small, agile teams in the tech sector is gaining traction, particularly among AI startups. Notable figures like LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman have suggested that a team of 15 leveraging AI can outperform a traditional team of 150. Similarly, Mark Zuckerberg indicated that smaller, talent-rich teams are becoming the preferred model for driving innovative research at Meta. Reina also highlighted the company's compensation strategy, which incentivizes both account executives and customer success managers to promote upselling within the first year of a client relationship. "I'm paying double, but I don't care," he remarked, emphasizing the benefits of motivating team members to maximize their earnings. This focus on high performance is not exclusive to ElevenLabs; major companies like Google are also revising their compensation frameworks to reward top achievers more generously.
