Move over, Cursor. This AI video startup is having its own breakout moment

San Francisco-based startup Higgsfield is making waves in the AI video creation arena, reporting a staggering revenue run rate of $500 million, a significant leap from just $50 million last September. The company has doubled its revenue this year, distinguishing itself as one of the few AI firms to achieve cash-flow positivity. With this impressive growth trajectory, Higgsfield is eager to join the ranks of industry leaders like Cursor and Lovable, both of which have become synonymous with the rapid adoption of AI technologies. Lovable recently announced it also reached $500 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), while Cursor, which was acquired by SpaceX for a whopping $60 billion, reported over $4 billion in ARR. Mahi de Silva, Higgsfield's Chief Strategy Officer, expressed confidence that the company could reach a $1 billion run rate by the end of the year. He attributed this remarkable growth primarily to the ease of AI media creation for users without technical backgrounds. Currently, Higgsfield serves 390 Fortune 500 companies, with commercial advertising representing 70% of its platform's activities. De Silva pointed out that the democratization of AI tools is attracting a significant number of users to their platform. This success has led to a $150 million investment from prominent venture capital firms like Accel and Menlo Ventures, pushing Higgsfield's valuation to $1.3 billion earlier this year. Despite the challenges many AI startups face, De Silva noted, "We were cash-flow positive at the end of May, making us an exception in the industry," while also revealing plans for a Series B funding round due to increasing investor interest. Founded in 2023, Higgsfield has faced its share of criticism for producing what some have termed "AI slop," including potentially problematic content. A recent survey indicated that nearly 30% of creators do not disclose their use of AI tools to clients. However, De Silva defended the legitimacy of AI-generated media, equating it to the well-accepted use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) in films. He stated, "When Scarlett Johansson appears in an Avengers movie, there isn’t a disclaimer that says, 'This movie was built with CGI. It wasn’t real.'" When asked about potential competition from OpenAI or Anthropic, De Silva suggested that the relationship is more collaborative than adversarial. He emphasized that Higgsfield harnesses the strengths of various models for its clients. He also referenced OpenAI's decision to step back from its Sora initiative, suggesting that creating a standalone AI video product is more challenging than merely possessing the underlying technology.
