Hermeus raises $350M to build autonomous hypersonic fighters

Hermeus, a defense startup based in Los Angeles, has successfully raised $350 million to further its ambitious project of creating what it terms the "fastest unmanned aircraft". This latest funding round has elevated the company's valuation to an impressive $1 billion. The funding includes $200 million in equity financing, spearheaded by Khosla Ventures, along with contributions from existing investors such as Canaan Partners, Founders Fund, In-Q-Tel, and RTX Ventures. Additionally, new investments have come from the venture arm of media giant Cox Enterprises and Destiny Tech100, a publicly-traded investment firm. The remaining $150 million is sourced as debt, which co-founder and CEO AJ Piplica explained will allow the company to maintain control while expanding its manufacturing capabilities. Piplica emphasized that financing a significant portion of their expenditures through non-dilutive means is a strategic advantage as Hermeus continues to grow. The surge in funding for defense tech startups, which reached over $9 billion last year according to PitchBook, is indicative of a larger trend where venture capitalists and corporate investors are increasingly interested in military technology. However, Hermeus's success in fundraising also stems from a pivotal technical shift made a few years ago. Initially, the company dedicated resources to developing its own engine but later pivoted to collaborate with RTX’s Pratt & Whitney to adapt the F100 engine for its hypersonic aircraft. This strategic move has enabled Hermeus to expedite its development process, allowing for more efficient testing and the establishment of contracts with the U.S. government. The company's president, Zach Shore, noted that this new direction not only accelerates their path to achieving Mach 5 speeds but also enhances the financial viability of the business while addressing immediate demands from the Department of Defense. In a recent demonstration, Hermeus showcased a prototype aircraft comparable in size to an F-16, with plans to develop a supersonic version next. The startup's approach to rapid prototyping mirrors the practices of SpaceX, focusing on an iterative process of building, testing, and refining. Piplica highlighted the challenge of attracting talent capable of working on full-scale aircraft, as the industry has seen a decline in such expertise over the years. The new influx of capital will aid in expanding Hermeus's workforce, which is nearing 300 employees. While the company has successfully conducted two test flights, Piplica acknowledged the necessity of being prepared for setbacks during development. He stressed the importance of balancing risk with capital investment, indicating that failure is an expected part of the innovation process. As Hermeus continues to accelerate its aircraft development, the focus on building multiple prototypes will be crucial for advancing their technology and meeting project timelines.
