Initially, serving himself a protein shake was a challenge, taking nearly two hours, but with practice, he streamlined the process to just minutes. Platt emphasizes the significance of regaining autonomy and how robotic assistants could revolutionize daily life for individuals with mobility impairments, enabling them to remain home alone while providing peace of mind to their families. Stretch is intentionally designed with limited autonomy, ensuring that a human operator is always in control, which is a vital feature according to Matulevitch. Despite significant investment in robotics, many designs still struggle with weight and balance, posing challenges in home environments. For instance, a recent incident involved a startup facing legal issues after its robot damaged furniture while being tested in a rental property. Experts like Mahi Shafiullah, who has worked on robotic hands at UC Berkeley, highlight that the current state of hardware remains inadequate for home use. Hello Robot's Stretch, while simpler than some humanoid robots, is built with a focus on safety and usability. Edsinger draws parallels to Waymo's success in the self-driving sector, stressing that a careful approach can lead to effective home automation solutions. Stretch, priced at $30,000, is positioned as an accessible option compared to competitors, especially considering the additional costs of sensors and software that other robots may lack. The company aims to produce between 200 and 300 units at its Martinez facility, with an initial batch already sold out.
