In Martinez, California, a startup named Hello Robot is redefining the landscape of home robotics, distancing itself from the lofty promises of its Silicon Valley counterparts. Last month, the company unveiled the latest version of its home assistance robot, Stretch, which stands out with its unique design that somewhat resembles a humanoid figure. Stretch features a human-like torso and a sensor-equipped head, but its functionality is driven by a flexible arm with pinchers and a robust wheeled base for mobility. When its batteries deplete, Stretch's eyes light up, giving it a somewhat 'angry' appearance, as noted humorously by engineer Blaine Matulevich. Founded in 2017 by CEO Aaron Edsinger, a former Google robotics director, and CTO Charlie Kemp, a Georgia Institute of Technology professor, Hello Robot is not about creating a robot that will replace human jobs but rather focusing on making robots practical for everyday life. Stretch is designed to operate in real homes alongside real individuals, a stark contrast to many robots that remain confined to labs. This approach is crucial, especially as advancements in artificial intelligence lead to increased capabilities, yet a lack of practical training data persists. Investors are now emphasizing the importance of real-world deployment over mere innovation. Keith Platt, an investor and board member at Hello Robot, became involved with the company after using Stretch as a personal assistant. Platt, who became quadriplegic in 2021, utilizes a voice-controlled iPhone app to manage Stretch, allowing him to perform tasks independently, such as preparing breakfast. Initially, serving himself a protein shake was a challenge, taking nearly two hours, but with practice, he streamlined the process to just minutes. Platt emphasizes the significance of regaining autonomy and how robotic assistants could revolutionize daily life for individuals with mobility impairments, enabling them to remain home alone while providing peace of mind to their families. Stretch is intentionally designed with limited autonomy, ensuring that a human operator is always in control, which is a vital feature according to Matulevitch. Despite significant investment in robotics, many designs still struggle with weight and balance, posing challenges in home environments. For instance, a recent incident involved a startup facing legal issues after its robot damaged furniture while being tested in a rental property. Experts like Mahi Shafiullah, who has worked on robotic hands at UC Berkeley, highlight that the current state of hardware remains inadequate for home use. Hello Robot's Stretch, while simpler than some humanoid robots, is built with a focus on safety and usability. Edsinger draws parallels to Waymo's success in the self-driving sector, stressing that a careful approach can lead to effective home automation solutions. Stretch, priced at $30,000, is positioned as an accessible option compared to competitors, especially considering the additional costs of sensors and software that other robots may lack. The company aims to produce between 200 and 300 units at its Martinez facility, with an initial batch already sold out. Hello Robot is committed to maintaining affordability for researchers and developers, ensuring that Stretch can be shipped easily and remains accessible for further innovation.
