AI boom facing new risk? How helium shortage due to West Asia war is threatening chip production

The recent conflict in the Middle East, particularly the strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, has raised alarms not only for liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies but also for a potentially severe impact on global chip manufacturing due to helium shortages. This facility is responsible for nearly one-third of the world's helium supply, a vital resource in semiconductor production. As demand for advanced chips powered by artificial intelligence (AI) escalates, any disruption in helium supplies could significantly disrupt the tech industry's supply chain. According to Ankush Wadhera, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, the crisis has revealed a concerning fragility in semiconductor supply chains, where both production and transportation routes are overly concentrated. Helium is indispensable for various critical processes in chip manufacturing, including wafer temperature control, cooling, photolithography, and vacuum environments. The ongoing challenges in the supply chain are set to lead to skyrocketing costs for chip production, impacting major players in the industry such as Micron, Samsung Electronics, and TSMC. While Micron has opted not to comment on the situation, experts warn about the cascading effects of these disruptions. Wadhera highlights that the conflict has laid bare the vulnerabilities within helium supply chains and trade routes, which are now affecting multiple industries. As helium is essential for both traditional and advanced chips, the increasing demand paired with constrained supply will inevitably raise production costs, making semiconductors more expensive. The AI boom is not just enhancing the demand for chips; it is also elevating the production costs associated with them. With a significant shift towards edge devices like smartphones, which require more robust chips, and AI data centers relying on advanced GPUs, the reliance on helium becomes even more critical. Although legacy chips use helium less extensively, they still play a significant role in the economy where cutting-edge technology is not always necessary. As the industry grapples with these supply chain challenges, helium is emerging as an unforeseen bottleneck. To tackle this issue, Wadhera suggests that chip manufacturers should consider operational and strategic solutions such as implementing helium recycling and reclamation systems in new fabrication plants, enhancing process efficiency, and establishing inventory buffers where possible. Furthermore, diversifying supply sources beyond concentrated areas and securing long-term agreements will be crucial. Collaboration at a national level to find alternative supply sources and robust trade routes will be essential in mitigating the risks associated with geopolitical instability.
