Dr. Tom Kelly, a trauma surgeon, has witnessed firsthand the overwhelming burden of administrative tasks faced by healthcare professionals. Driven by a desire for change, he embarked on a mission to create a solution. "We aimed to develop an AI care partner that supports clinicians by managing administrative duties, allowing providers like myself to focus on delivering the care we are passionate about," he shared with TechCrunch. In collaboration with Waleed Mussa, a former colleague from a previous venture, Dr. Kelly founded Heidi Health in 2021. The startup began introducing its innovative products in early 2024. Within just 18 months, the company has reportedly saved over 18 million hours for healthcare providers across more than 70 million patient visits in 116 countries. Heidi Health offers an AI medical scribe that handles tedious administrative tasks, including transcribing notes, generating personalized patient summaries, and tracking tasks, eliminating the need for sticky notes. The company has developed its own AI model while also integrating capabilities from existing models, such as Gemini. "This model-agnostic approach enables us to enhance our accuracy, speed, and cost-effectiveness," Dr. Kelly explained. On Monday, Heidi Health announced the successful completion of a $65 million Series B funding round, led by Steve Cohen’s Point72. The company also unveiled a new AI tool that allows the system to make patient calls on behalf of doctors. Notable additions to the team include Dr. Simon Kos, the former Chief Medical Officer at Microsoft, and Paul Williamson, the revenue head from Plaid. To date, Heidi Health has raised a total of $96.6 million, with participation from investors such as Goodwater Capital, Headline, Blackbird VC, LG Technology Ventures, and Alumni Ventures. Dr. Kelly noted that Point72 was impressed by Heidi's product adoption and usage statistics, which stood out compared to other medical scribe solutions. The new funding will support further product development, with Dr. Kelly envisioning a future where AI tools empower healthcare providers globally, even in challenging environments like war zones or underserved communities. "Imagine a scenario where every healthcare provider can leverage Heidi to enhance their clinical capacity, reaching more patients and delivering improved healthcare outcomes," he stated. As AI continues to reshape the healthcare landscape, Dr. Kelly emphasizes the enduring importance of human connection in fostering trust within the medical field. "The ultimate goal is to double global healthcare capacity. That is the real promise of AI, and we are committed to making it a reality," he concluded.
