In a surprising shift, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made significant alterations to the charter of a key federal vaccine advisory panel. These changes are designed to empower Kennedy's allies and redirect the panel's efforts toward discussions around vaccine-related injuries and risks, as well as to include fringe and anti-vaccine groups within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). On Monday, an announcement in the Federal Register confirmed that Kennedy has renewed the charter for the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a renewal that occurs every two years. However, this renewal has deviated from the traditional process, indicating substantial changes in the foundational document that guides federal vaccine policy, which ultimately affects state mandates and insurance coverage. The revised charter, made public on Thursday, outlines new responsibilities that align closely with the interests of anti-vaccine advocates. Notably, ACIP members are now tasked with "considering analysis of cumulative effects of vaccines and their constituent components." This phrasing resonates with the objectives of Kennedy’s supporters, who attribute complex health conditions—such as allergies and neurodevelopmental disorders—to the effects of vaccines and their ingredients, like aluminum adjuvants. This marks a departure from earlier anti-vaccine narratives that targeted individual vaccines, particularly the disproven assertion linking the measles vaccine to autism, a claim dismissed by numerous rigorous studies. Furthermore, the updated charter explicitly requires ACIP to monitor mRNA vaccines, a category that has faced considerable scrutiny from Kennedy and his associates. Kennedy has previously made unfounded statements regarding the dangers of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, labeling it “the deadliest vaccine ever made.”
