Bat colony checks in to hotel; 200 guests check out, unaware of rabies scare

In a concerning development, health authorities in Wyoming are addressing a potential rabies exposure affecting over 200 guests who stayed at a hotel within Grand Teton National Park during the months of May through July. This alert follows the National Park Service's recent discovery of a bat colony residing in the attic of the Jackson Lake Lodge. The alarming find was prompted by a series of at least eight incidents where guests reportedly encountered bats inside the hotel premises. As a precautionary measure, the Wyoming Health Department is actively reaching out to individuals who occupied specific rooms under the affected area, particularly rooms 516 through 530, during their stay from May 15 to July 27. The situation escalated on July 27, when the eighth bat encounter was reported, leading to the closure of the eight impacted rooms. Travis Riddell, the director of the Teton County Public Health Department, expressed a silver lining in this incident, stating, "Although there were a lot of people exposed, one positive aspect is that we know exactly who those individuals are." Bats, recognized as significant carriers of rabies in Wyoming alongside skunks, pose unique risks. Unlike the more apparent dangers posed by skunk attacks, bat encounters can often go unnoticed, as scratches or bites may be subtle and easily overlooked. The rabies virus is primarily transmitted through saliva, and the small brown bat, the most common species in the region, typically weighs less than half an ounce. Their small size can make bites and scratches less detectable, as they often do not bleed and are not immediately painful. As the health department works to ensure the safety of all affected individuals, they emphasize the importance of being vigilant about potential rabies exposures, especially in areas where bats are known to inhabit.
