Fans of the iconic 1980s series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, are in for a treat as Amazon MGM Studios gears up to release a new film adaptation. This much-anticipated project aims to revive the beloved franchise, which also includes the spinoff, She-Ra: Princess of Power, alongside a popular line of action figures. The recently unveiled extended teaser trailer suggests that this film will delve deeply into the origins of He-Man. Unlike the 1987 film adaptation starring Dolph Lundgren, which was met with critical disdain and box office failure, this new version promises to stay closer to the source material. The original film's significant deviations from the animated series alienated many fans, though it has garnered a cult following over the years. The journey to bring He-Man back to the big screen has been tumultuous, with nearly two decades of development struggles. Initial rumors in 2007 hinted at a project directed by John Woo for Warner Bros., but it never materialized. Sony Pictures then acquired the rights in 2009, leading to a series of script rewrites and changes in directors, including notable names like John Chu and McG. In 2022, Netflix briefly took the reins following their success with animated versions featuring Kyle Allen as He-Man, but they ultimately canceled the project due to budget issues. Now, Amazon MGM has stepped in, appointing Travis Knight, known for Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings, as director and casting Nicholas Galitzine, recognized for his role in the 2021 Cinderella, as the new He-Man. With a fresh vision and new talent, the upcoming film aims to cater to both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
