HBO Max comes to India via exclusive JioHotstar deal

In a significant move for the Indian streaming landscape, JioHotstar, a prominent service under Reliance Industries, has announced an expanded collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery to introduce HBO Max to Indian viewers. Starting at just ₹49 (approximately $0.50) per month, HBO Max will be available as an add-on for current JioHotstar subscribers, featuring an impressive lineup of content from HBO, Max Originals, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios. This pricing strategy stands in stark contrast to the standalone Basic tier of HBO Max in the U.S., which is priced at $10.99 per month. JioHotstar also informed TechCrunch that the existing subscription plans of users will influence their viewing experience, suggesting that those on lower-priced plans might encounter advertisements. The platform's pricing begins at ₹79 (around $0.85) monthly for mobile users with ads and can go up to ₹299 (roughly $3.20) per month for an ad-free premium experience. India's streaming market is witnessing rapid growth, highlighted by a recent CLSA report that estimates total monthly active users (MAUs) at about 1.45 billion. This surge is attributed to the availability of affordable mobile data and increasing smartphone usage. YouTube leads the market with 772 million MAUs, while JioHotstar ranks second with approximately 390 million MAUs. Despite this growth, the penetration of streaming services remains limited in smaller cities, with usage rates between 23% to 27% in Tier 2 locations and just 7% to 8% in Tier 3 towns, according to estimates from Third Bridge. Notably, many users access streaming content through bundled offerings rather than through direct subscriptions. The HBO Max hub is set to offer a blend of new and existing titles for Indian audiences, including the much-anticipated third season of Euphoria, the upcoming episodes of House of the Dragon, DC Studios’ Lanterns, and a new Harry Potter series, among other exciting content.
