Warner Bros. Discovery raises HBO Max prices as it puts itself up for sale

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has announced a price hike for HBO Max subscriptions, with increases reaching up to 10%. The changes will see the ad-supported plan rise from $10 to $11 per month, while the ad-free plan will go from $17 to $18.49 monthly. Additionally, the premium ad-free plan—which includes 4K support, Dolby Atmos, and enhanced download capabilities—will see its price increase from $21 to $23. Annual subscription rates are also set to climb, with the ad-supported plan moving from $100 to $110, the ad-free plan from $170 to $185, and the premium tier jumping from $210 to $230. Current subscribers will experience these increases starting November 20, while new subscribers will need to pay the updated rates immediately. This adjustment follows comments from WBD's CEO, David Zaslav, who indicated last month that HBO Max's pricing has been too low. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Cornucopia + Technology conference, Zaslav highlighted the service's quality and referenced that average spending on content was significantly higher a decade ago. The price increase is not unexpected, as HBO Max has a history of raising its subscription fees. The most recent hike occurred in June 2024, following an earlier increase in January 2023, shortly after the service's launch in May 2020. As streaming platforms like Disney+, Apple TV, and Peacock also raise their prices, it signals a broader trend within the industry, as providers navigate the financial challenges of maintaining extensive libraries of content for viewers around the globe. WBD has consistently argued that streaming services should reflect the true value of the content offered, with CFO Gunnar Weidenfels commenting on the unsustainable nature of low-price strategies in the streaming market.
