In the picturesque mountains of northwest Colorado, the small town of Hayden is embarking on an ambitious journey to diversify its economy, following in the footsteps of other energy towns in the region. Historically reliant on a coal-fired power plant, which is set to close in the near future, Hayden is now turning to geothermal energy as a sustainable alternative to power its future. Town leaders, seeking to establish a new business park, recognized the potential of harnessing geothermal energy for heating and cooling solutions. This innovative approach not only aligns with Colorado's sustainability initiatives but also opens doors to grants and tax credits, making the project viable for its approximately 2,000 residents, explained Matthew Mendisco, the town manager. "We’re laying the groundwork to attract businesses, create local jobs, and ensure that our community benefits from reliable and cost-effective heating and cooling for years to come," Mendisco stated. To facilitate this, Bedrock Energy, a startup specializing in geothermal drilling, is utilizing advanced techniques adapted from the oil and gas sector. The company is drilling numerous boreholes, each extending 1,000 feet deep, to tap into the Earth's consistent underground temperatures. At the surface, the Earth maintains a temperature of around 51°F, which gradually rises to approximately 64°F at the depths of the boreholes. These boreholes will connect the industrial park’s buildings, utilizing thermal energy for efficient heating in the winter and cooling in the summer, thus significantly lowering energy consumption. Each building will be equipped with ground source heat pumps to optimize temperature control throughout the year, marking a significant step towards a sustainable energy future for Hayden.
