Wipro's Rishad Premji says AI value lies in solving real-world problems at scale

Rishad Premji, Executive Chairman of Wipro, emphasized the importance of applying technology responsibly to tackle real-world challenges at scale during his address at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 on February 19. As India asserts its role in the global artificial intelligence landscape, Premji noted that the dialogue surrounding technology is at a pivotal moment, transitioning from theoretical discussions to widespread implementation. He remarked, "The conversation has fundamentally shifted from possibility to practicality, from experimentation to adoption, and from pilots to scaled impact." This transformation is crucial, as the true value of technology emerges when it is used effectively to address significant societal issues. Premji highlighted that India's advantage in leading the next wave of AI innovation lies in its extensive talent pool and burgeoning innovation ecosystem. Currently, the nation boasts around 650,000 AI professionals, with projections indicating that this number may double by 2027, positioning India as a prime destination for AI talent. He also pointed to India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) as a testament to technology's scalability when designed for inclusivity, referencing the impressive 20 billion monthly transactions processed through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Moreover, Premji provided impactful examples of AI applications, such as satellite imagery aiding farmers in Karnataka and Maharashtra to minimize crop losses by approximately 25%, and portable AI-driven X-ray devices facilitating early tuberculosis detection in rural Tamil Nadu. He concluded by stating that India's future success in AI will hinge on making responsible deployment choices, rather than merely focusing on technological advancements. "The dividing line will not be human versus machine; it will truly be between those who adapt and those who hesitate to adapt," he asserted.
