Marketing to "a segment of one" is possible with AI, says Adobe's enterprise CMO

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the marketing landscape, enabling brands to create highly personalized customer experiences. Rachel Thornton, chief marketing officer of Adobe's enterprise division, shared her insights on the role of AI in transforming marketing strategies during a recent interview with CMO Insider. Thornton highlighted that AI fosters a culture of experimentation among marketers, empowering them to innovate and scale their efforts swiftly. A key advantage of this technology is its ability to optimize personalization. For instance, beauty retailer Ulta is leveraging AI to analyze customer data, allowing them to tailor marketing efforts to the individual level, crafting a unique relationship with each customer. "It's about building a one-on-one relationship and customizing the entire journey around the customer," Thornton explained. She emphasized that AI permits brands to move beyond traditional demographic targeting, enabling a focus on individual preferences and behaviors throughout the customer journey. With AI tools, Ulta can now understand what customers are purchasing, how they engage with the brand, and what products they are returning. This comprehensive insight allows for marketing strategies that cater to specific individuals rather than broad demographic categories. Furthermore, Adobe's GenStudio product empowers marketers to create and scale brand campaigns across various channels and languages. Thornton noted that understanding customer data and insights is vital to enhancing the customer experience. At Adobe, the guiding principle is to empower creativity across all levels. Thornton expressed her belief that everyone possesses creative potential, which Adobe seeks to nurture through its extensive suite of tools. Reflecting on the community aspect of Adobe’s events, Thornton mentioned the excitement surrounding their Adobe Max and Adobe Summit gatherings, where customers come together to learn and share their experiences with Adobe products. Listening to customer feedback is integral to Adobe’s innovation process, driving the development of tools that meet user needs. Thornton also shared her personal enthusiasm for AI, particularly in exploring new recipes and planning travel itineraries, showcasing how the technology enhances both her professional and personal life. As AI continues to evolve, its potential to reshape marketing and customer relationships is becoming increasingly apparent.
