AI holds immense potential to transform healthcare delivery, says CII Healthcare Council

In the face of increasing obesity, cancer rates, and chronic illnesses, experts at the 22nd CII Annual Health Summit emphasized the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare delivery. The event, held in New Delhi under the theme "Adding Life to Years in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," showcased how technology can effectively address the growing healthcare demands in India. Naresh Trehan, Chairman of the CII Steering Group on Health & Healthcare Council and CMD of Medanta - The Medicity, highlighted the progress India has made through government initiatives and public-private partnerships. He stressed that the next crucial step is to leverage AI for improved access and efficiency in healthcare services. "With a population of 1.4 billion, ensuring quality healthcare for all is a priority for governments worldwide, particularly in India," Trehan stated. He remarked on the urgent need for innovative solutions to tackle the nation's escalating healthcare challenges, asserting that AI could significantly enhance service delivery while lowering costs and improving overall effectiveness. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals, noted the visible strides India has already made in digital health. "We have seen significant improvements in crucial healthcare metrics, including reduced infant and maternal mortality rates, more affordable treatment options, and a surge in medical tourism," she explained. Reddy pointed to the creation of over 790 million ABHA IDs as evidence of a robust digital health infrastructure. With a wealth of health data points and a solid base in digital technologies, she believes AI has the potential to further elevate India's healthcare system. The Summit also underscored the importance of international collaboration. Kenji Shibuya, CEO of Medical Excellence, Japan, remarked that a partnership between India and Japan could lead to groundbreaking advancements in healthcare. He mentioned that integrating AI with Ayurveda, India's traditional healing system, could significantly enhance its efficacy. Shibuya noted that Japan's strengths in preventive healthcare, combined with India's technological capabilities, create a powerful opportunity for South-South cooperation. Additionally, a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was announced between the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Medical Excellence Japan (MEJ), and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). This agreement aims to promote collaboration in healthcare technology, policy research, and capacity building. Takayuki Yamanaka, COO at ERIA, remarked that this MoU represents a collective commitment to developing a resilient and sustainable healthcare ecosystem between the two nations. Summarizing the discussions, Shubnum Singh, Principal Advisor for Healthcare at CII, asserted that reimagining healthcare through AI is essential for India's path to becoming a developed nation. Amita Sarkar, Deputy Director General of CII, added that the Summit's theme encapsulates the potential of technology not only to extend life but also to enhance the quality and dignity of those additional years.
