Los Angeles-based electric vehicle startup Harbinger has introduced its latest creation: a more compact, medium-duty work truck known as the HC Series Cab. This innovative vehicle will be available in both all-electric and hybrid configurations, with the hybrid variant boasting an impressive range of up to 500 miles. The HC Series Cab is designed with practicality in mind, featuring a user-friendly entry and exit, a small turning radius, and customizable chassis options to accommodate various needs such as cargo boxes or flatbeds. However, the company has yet to disclose any pricing information. John Harris, co-founder and CEO of Harbinger, expressed the company’s ambition to bridge the gap that fleets have faced for too long when it comes to payload capacity, maneuverability, range, and onboard functionality. He stated, “We engineered this platform to outperform legacy diesel options while unlocking new advantages through electrification and our range-extended hybrid system to enable real work in the field.” Founded in 2022, Harbinger has shown rapid progress, securing a $100 million Series B funding in January 2025, followed by a $160 million Series C round in November. The company has already attracted notable clients, including FedEx and RV manufacturer THOR Industries, with its larger truck chassis that can operate in both electric and hybrid modes. In addition to its truck offerings, Harbinger has been expanding its business model. Earlier this year, the company began selling energy storage solutions, with Airstream being its inaugural customer. In February, Harbinger made headlines with its acquisition of Phantom AI, a software company specializing in autonomous vehicle technology. While many electric vehicle startups have struggled, Harris maintains a focused vision for Harbinger, emphasizing a commitment to realistic goals. He believes that diversification of revenue streams is essential for long-term stability in a volatile U.S. market. Despite challenges in the electric passenger vehicle sector, Harris argues that electric and hybrid solutions present a compelling case for commercial trucking due to lower ownership costs and reduced maintenance demands. Although specific revenue figures for 2025 haven’t been publicized, Harris hinted that the company’s sales could significantly exceed those of the entire electric truck market in 2024. He also noted that Harbinger's vertically integrated model allows for continuous exploration of new business avenues, stating, “We built these verticals of what I think of as our own in-house suppliers.”
