In a surprising twist of creativity, developers and modders have long sought to run the iconic first-person shooter Doom on virtually any device with a screen. Recently, coder Arin Sarkisian has taken this challenge to new heights by attempting to run the game on wireless earbuds, a device that typically lacks the capacity for graphic rendering. This innovative project, dubbed "Doombuds," specifically targets the PineBuds Pro earbuds. What sets these earbuds apart is their fully open-source firmware and a community-supported software development kit (SDK). This unique feature enabled Sarkisian to develop a JavaScript interface that leverages the earbuds' UART contact pads. By utilizing this setup, he successfully streams a highly compressed MJPEG video to a web server through a serial server. The UART connection can handle a data rate of 2.4 MB/s, allowing for a frame output of approximately 22 to 27 frames per second. This performance is notably sufficient, especially considering the game’s maximum frame rate of 18 fps on less capable hardware.
