In a recent announcement, President Trump revealed a significant increase in the application fee for H-1B visas, which will now cost $10,000. This decision has sparked considerable concern, particularly within the tech industry, which relies heavily on these visas to attract international talent. During a recent episode of Equity, we hosted Jeremy Neufeld, the director of immigration policy at the Institute for Progress. He provided insights into the recent changes to the visa and their implications. Neufeld acknowledged that while the intentions behind the changes may have merit, the execution has left much to be desired. He noted, "Some of the proposals that they've ended up settling on have either loopholes or they’re prioritizing the wrong thing." Neufeld expressed concerns that these changes may unintentionally hinder the very goal the Trump administration aimed to achieve. He stated, "It’s going to be a big tax on us bringing in top researchers from around the world." Despite the widespread criticism of the fee hike, Neufeld explained that there are supporters of the changes as well. He argued it is essential to ensure that the 85,000 available H-1B slots are filled by truly valuable workers and that implementing a fee could help filter applicants. The discussion also touched on the allegations of visa misuse by companies, with Neufeld pointing out that there are still loopholes that could be exploited. We explored additional modifications made to the visa process, particularly concerning required wage levels. Looking ahead, Neufeld speculated on the likelihood of further adjustments before the visa lottery in the spring, suggesting that many potential applicants might reconsider coming to the United States due to these changes. He emphasized that the current situation surrounding the H-1B visa remains uncertain, especially as the changes are now in a "notice and comment period," inviting public feedback. Given the mixed reactions to the new regulations, further modifications may be in the pipeline.
