Civil war:GZDoomfan developers split off over use of ChatGPT-generated code

The vibrant realm of Doom modding has seen countless innovative projects and modifications in recent years, particularly through the open-source platform GZDoom. This engine, rooted in the original ZDoom from 1998, enhances the classic Doom experience with modern graphics, improved gameplay features, and extensive modding capabilities. However, the community is now experiencing significant upheaval, as a group of developers has launched a new fork named UZDoom. This split arises as a response to the actions of Cristoph Oelckers, known as Graf Zahl, the creator and maintainer of GZDoom, who recently acknowledged incorporating untested, AI-generated code into the GZDoom project. Developer Nash Muhandes expressed the group’s sentiments on the DoomWorld forums, stating, "Due to some disagreements—some recent, some that have been tolerated for nearly two decades—regarding how collaboration should function, we feel that the most prudent course of action is to fork the project." Muhandes emphasized the desire to preserve the GZDoom legacy while advocating for a new development model that encourages open and transparent collaboration among developers. Over the years, Zahl's leadership style has sparked various conflicts within the GZDoom community, as detailed in discussions across platforms like Reddit. The trigger for the recent UZDoom split appears to be particularly linked to the contentious use of AI-generated code by Zahl in a recent update. Although the implications of using AI coding tools can be subtle, a specific example drew attention: Zahl referenced suggestions from ChatGPT regarding dark mode detection for Linux in his code comments. This situation highlights the growing tensions over the integration of AI in software development and its acceptance within established communities.
