In a first in UK, Neuralink implant enables paralysed man to play video games

In a remarkable advancement for brain-computer interface technology, a man paralyzed due to motor neuron disease has successfully used a Neuralink implant to control a computer with his thoughts. This pioneering procedure took place at University College London Hospitals, marking a significant milestone for the UK, as Neuralink Corp., the brain implant company founded by Elon Musk, announced its first participant in the nation. The individual, named Paul, received his implant earlier this month and was able to navigate a computer mere hours after the surgery. Neuralink shared the news on X, stating, "We’re excited to announce our first participant in the UK!" Paul is now collaborating with Neuralink engineers to explore the potential of using the implant for gaming, including his favorite titles like Dawn of War, as well as other activities that could enhance his daily life. This achievement is a crucial step towards making Neuralink's innovative technology accessible to individuals worldwide. Earlier this year, the company revealed plans to initiate a clinical study in Great Britain, partnering with University College London Hospitals and Newcastle Hospitals to conduct research on its brain chips. Neuralink has raised over $1 billion in funding, with a valuation reaching $9 billion in its most recent funding round. As one of several companies pursuing brain-computer interface technology, Neuralink aims to implant its devices in 20,000 individuals annually by 2031, targeting an annual revenue of at least $1 billion. Michael Lawton, CEO of the Barrow Neurological Institute, which is involved in Neuralink trials, emphasized that the company is currently focused on patients with disabilities rather than healthy individuals. The implant's capabilities extend beyond gaming; it has enabled Paul to browse the internet, manage social media accounts, and operate a laptop cursor effortlessly. Moreover, Neuralink is developing additional chips intended to restore vision, interpret brain activity into speech, and provide treatments for conditions like Parkinson's disease. Looking ahead, Neuralink plans to launch a trial this October designed to assist individuals with speech impairments in translating their thoughts into text. According to the company’s president, this groundbreaking study aims to allow participants to communicate directly from brain to voice, eliminating the need for traditional input methods. As Neuralink continues to push boundaries in neuroscience, the possibilities for enhancing and restoring autonomy for those with disabilities appear more promising than ever.
