AI chipmaker Groq confirms $650M raise, re-staffs after Nvidia’s $20B not-acqui-hire deal

In the wake of a significant talent acquisition by Nvidia, AI chip maker Groq is making bold moves to secure its future. Following Nvidia's hefty payment to investors and the departure of key personnel, including Groq's founder and CEO Jonathan Ross, the company has announced a new funding round of $650 million. This announcement comes just six months after Nvidia signed a licensing agreement to use Groq's technology. Groq, which was last valued at $6.9 billion after a $750 million funding round in September, did not disclose its current valuation with this latest raise. Ross, who previously contributed to the development of Google's Tensor Processing Unit, co-founded Groq with Doug Wightman a decade ago. Following the Nvidia deal, Wightman took over as CEO while Groq shifted its focus towards its neocloud business, which has expanded to 13 data centers globally, serving millions of developers and processing trillions of tokens weekly. To bolster its leadership team, Groq has appointed new executives, including Alan Rice as COO, who has a background at xAI and Meta, and a duo, Sinclair Schuller as CTO and Rakesh Malhotra as CPO, who previously collaborated at Apprenda and Nuvalence. The company is navigating a competitive landscape in inference technology, which is seeing rising demand and investment. Despite the challenges posed by Nvidia's acquisition of critical IP, Groq's prospects depend on its ability to innovate and maintain competitiveness in the inference cloud market. Other companies like Scale AI have successfully rebounded from similar situations, suggesting that Groq may also find a path to recovery and growth in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
