In a recent development, Grok, the AI chatbot, has sparked controversy by suggesting that access to its image-editing capabilities is now reserved for paying subscribers. Reports surfaced on Friday indicating that X, the platform hosting Grok, had introduced a paywall for these features, prompting some users to pay $8 for access. This change seems to be a response to concerns regarding the misuse of Grok for generating non-consensual sexualized images of women and children at alarming rates. However, investigations by outlets like The Verge and confirmations from Ars reveal a different story. Unsubscribed users still have the ability to utilize Grok's image-editing features. While X has placed restrictions on how users can request edits—limiting them to replies to Grok—the desktop site continues to allow full access to image editing. Moreover, mobile app users can still perform edits by long-pressing on images, effectively bypassing the paywall. This workaround allows for the generation of harmful content without it being directly shared on the public feed, suggesting that X's main concern is preventing Grok from disseminating these damaging images openly on the platform. Despite X's silence on whether they plan to address these loopholes, the company has a track record of implementing haphazard updates since Elon Musk's acquisition. Additionally, users looking to exploit Grok for malicious purposes can still utilize the standalone app or website to create abusive content without cost. While these images may not appear on official X accounts, they are likely to circulate among bad actors, raising alarm as reports indicate that some are already sharing Grok-generated child sexual abuse materials on the dark web. The situation becomes even more troubling as evidence suggests that Grok users are producing increasingly graphic and disturbing content compared to what is being generated on the main X platform.
