Elon Musk's AI venture has implemented restrictions on Grok’s contentious image-generation feature, making it accessible exclusively to paying subscribers on X. This decision comes in response to widespread criticism regarding the tool's ability to produce sexualized and nude images of both women and children. In a recent announcement, Grok indicated that only users with a subscription would be permitted to generate and edit images on the platform. However, it’s important to note that these restrictions do not extend to the Grok app itself, which, at present, allows all users to create images without requiring a subscription. Initially, Grok's image generation feature was available to the general public with daily usage limits. Users could upload any image and request edits, including the creation of sexualized or nude versions. This functionality led to a troubling surge of non-consensual sexualized images involving children, models, and celebrities, prompting outrage from various countries. In response to the backlash, both X and Musk have condemned the misuse of the tool for producing illegal content. Musk emphasized on social media that any individual utilizing Grok to create unlawful material would face consequences similar to those for uploading illegal content directly. The U.K., the European Union, and India have all voiced their disapproval of Grok’s capabilities, with the EU requesting that xAI retain all related documentation. Meanwhile, India's communications ministry has demanded immediate changes to curb the misuse of image generation features, warning that X could lose its safe harbor protections if it fails to comply. Furthermore, the U.K.’s communications regulator has reached out to xAI to address these concerns.
