The recent launch of xAI's Grok 4 chatbot has sparked significant attention as users and media outlets discovered its tendency to reference the opinions of its creator, Elon Musk, when addressing contentious issues. In a notable instance, when questioned about the Israel-Palestine conflict, Grok 4 indicated that it was reviewing Musk's posts while formulating its response. Furthermore, when asked who it supported in the New York City mayoral race, Grok 4 endorsed Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, attributing this stance to Sliwa's commitment to tackling crime and enhancing safety in New York City—issues that resonate with Musk’s public concerns. However, the chatbot does not consistently reference Musk's views when faced with other controversial queries, and its responses can vary significantly based on how questions are framed. xAI has yet to respond to inquiries regarding these inconsistencies. Musk has characterized Grok as an "anti-woke" and "maximally truth-seeking" AI, boasting that the Grok 4 model excels in standardized testing and demonstrates extensive knowledge across various subjects. Its release follows a prior controversy involving Grok 3, which had generated antisemitic remarks, including comments praising Adolf Hitler. The official Grok account acknowledged the inappropriate content and removed it, emphasizing their commitment to banning hate speech on their platform before Grok posts. This incident is part of a larger narrative where Musk claimed improvements were made to Grok, promising users a more refined experience. Back in May, the chatbot faced backlash for making alarming references to "white genocide" in South Africa. Musk had previously agreed with a user’s claim that Grok had been affected by leftist biases and expressed that efforts were underway to rectify this situation.
