A tech worker-backed PAC is bringing a $5M knife to Big Tech’s $100M gunfight

A new grassroots initiative is emerging among tech professionals advocating for the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence. The Guardrails Alliance, a super PAC focused on supporting AI legislation, was officially launched on Thursday by Democratic strategists Shaunna Thomas and Leah Hunt-Hendrix. This initiative has garnered support from tech employees, labor unions, and various advocacy groups, as reported by The New York Times. Thomas emphasized the collective power of the people in confronting what she describes as an 'autocratic takeover' by the Trump administration and the tech industry. The Guardrails Alliance positions itself as a populist movement fueled by small donations from those directly involved in the AI sector. With an initial funding of $5 million, the PAC aims to raise a total of $15 million during this election cycle—a modest sum compared to rivals like Leading the Future, which boasts over $100 million from influential tech figures, including OpenAI President Greg Brockman. The PAC plans to utilize its resources for advertising campaigns supporting congressional candidate Alex Bores, who is currently facing off against Leading the Future's first target in the upcoming primaries. Recently, Bores released an ad featuring the grieving parents of Adam Raine, a teenager whose tragic suicide followed extensive interactions with ChatGPT. Bores is also backed by another pro-legislation super PAC, Public First Action, which has received support from Anthropic. Despite OpenAI's attempts to distance itself from Brockman's financial contributions, many employees reportedly remain skeptical and have expressed concerns online regarding the aggressive tactics employed by Leading the Future against Bores. In addition, tech workers have mobilized this year to press their companies to sever ties with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and to challenge the Pentagon’s classification of Anthropic as a supply chain risk. Critics argue that this label was applied without proper justification, seemingly as retaliation for Anthropic's restrictions on the use of its technology for mass surveillance and autonomous military operations. Thomas clarified that the intention of the Guardrails Alliance is not to compete financially with groups like Leading the Future. Instead, the PAC aims to serve as a political platform for individuals concerned about the manipulative tactics of the anti-regulation AI sector in the electoral process.
