Emerging music technology startups are increasingly harnessing artificial intelligence to generate music, yet GRAI is taking a different approach. This innovative company believes that the true potential lies not in creating music from scratch, but in enhancing social interactions around existing tracks. GRAI's vision is to allow users to remix songs, share them with friends, and experiment with different styles for enjoyment rather than merely producing new music. Recently securing $9 million in seed funding, GRAI is poised to shift the dynamics of music consumption, empowering artists while leveraging AI capabilities. The founders, who previously developed the video creation app VOCHI, are now focused on creating products that enhance how users engage with music. Their current offerings include the iOS app Music with Friends, designed for remixing, and an Android platform that serves as a music playground. Co-founder and CEO Ilya Liasun, now based in Poland, emphasizes that GRAI is built around the concept of redefining music interaction. He notes that music has lagged behind other creative industries in adopting a 'creator-first' approach. "Discovery is broken, listening is passive, and social context is almost non-existent," he explains, pointing out the need for a change. Contrary to fears that AI might threaten artists and labels, Liasun and his team believe that AI can foster new musical experiences without compromising the integrity of the original works. Targeting Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers, GRAI recognizes that these users prefer to participate in music culture rather than take on the roles of creators or producers. To facilitate this, GRAI has developed a proprietary taste and participation graph, alongside a robust infrastructure that ensures original tracks maintain their identity while being transformed. The company is committed to working with artists and labels to establish legal frameworks that support these creative interactions. The goal is not to flood streaming services with generative AI music but to focus on meaningful interactions. Users will be able to remix tracks or alter their styles within GRAI's apps, potentially generating new royalty streams for the artists involved. Liasun highlights their commitment to permission-first practices, stating, "We want to build a future system in which artists can opt in and out." As GRAI continues to refine its apps, the company is eager to gather user feedback, even if it's critical, to better understand the market's desires. With a strong base of investors, including Khosla Ventures and Inovo VC, GRAI's future endeavors could reshape how listeners discover artists and songs, extending beyond traditional platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
