Govini founder Eric Gillespie released on $1 million bond with Pentagon probe 'ongoing'

Eric Gillespie, the founder of Govini, has been released on a $1 million bond following serious charges, including unlawful contact with a minor. After appearing in court on Thursday, Gillespie, a Pittsburgh resident, posted bail but has been placed under strict travel restrictions, with his passport revoked. Initially arrested on November 7, Gillespie was denied bail due to concerns about flight risk and public safety. His attorney, David Shrager, firmly stated that Gillespie did not engage in any illegal activities, claiming, "Mr. Gillespie has never contacted a minor, either online or in person, and the facts clearly prove that." He criticized the accusations, asserting that the alleged discussions involving adults in a fantasy context are not unlawful. The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office has accused Gillespie of sending inappropriate images to an undercover agent posing as a father and making explicit comments about minors. The criminal complaint details that Gillespie, 57, discussed the security of encrypted messaging platforms used during these exchanges. Gillespie, who was previously featured as a board member on Govini’s website until August 17, was terminated from the company on November 12. Govini recently secured a substantial contract worth nearly $1 billion with the Department of Defense, providing AI-driven applications utilized by various military branches and federal agencies. Following Gillespie’s arrest, Pentagon officials announced they would investigate potential security implications associated with him and Govini. While inquiries about the ongoing investigation have been made to the Department of Defense, a spokesperson reiterated their policy of not commenting on active investigations.
