The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a critical advisory to the public about the existence of counterfeit versions of the official DigiLocker application. These deceptive apps are found on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and they are designed to unlawfully access sensitive personal documents from users. DigiLocker plays a pivotal role in India's Digital India initiative, serving as a secure digital wallet where individuals can store verified government documents, including driving licenses, vehicle registration certificates, and academic records. Managed by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), this platform is essential for promoting paperless governance and preventing document forgery. Unfortunately, MeitY has reported that cybercriminals are distributing malicious replicas of the app, often using names and branding that closely resemble the legitimate version, thereby misleading users. The advisory warns that individuals who download and utilize these fraudulent applications could face serious data breaches, including identity theft and financial fraud, as their personal information may be compromised. To safeguard public interest, the Digital India initiative has provided explicit recommendations. Users are advised to be extremely vigilant when searching for the app. The only reliable way to verify the app's authenticity is by checking the developer’s information; the official application is solely linked to the National e-Governance Division of the Government of India. Citizens are strongly encouraged to download the app exclusively from official links available on the government’s website to avoid the dangers associated with third-party app stores. Moreover, the guidance outlines immediate steps for those who may have inadvertently installed a counterfeit version. Users should promptly delete the suspicious app and change passwords for all related government services and accounts. The government emphasizes the importance of using only the legitimate application to protect vital digital assets and personal documents.
